Mullett Township
is a general law township in Cheboygan County, Michigan. The population was 1312 in the 2010 US census. The township and Mullett Lake are named for John Mullett, who with William Burt, surveyed much of the area between 1840 and 1843.

The commercial center of the Township is the quiet unincorporated Village of Topinabee located on the west shore of Mullett Lake on M27 highway. The village is a trailhead for the DNR Trail with off-street parking and restrooms.

The village has a Post Office, Convenience Store with gas pumps, Public Library with 24 hour outdoor WiFi, an artisan-owned woodwork shop, a breakfast cafe and a bar and grille. Township owned buildings include the Library, Township Hall and Fire Hall, and an unused former school building on Lea St.

Recreation needs are served with a beachfront park and covered picnic area, free public boat launch at the north end of the village, a small public access to Mullett Lake across from the Nokia Cafe and tennis court, ball-field, and playground equipment at a public park located up the hill on Lea St.

The east side of Mullett Township is largely rural, with no commercial development. Township services include a Fire Hall and volunteer East Mullett Lake Fire Department.

Tom Sez Improvements Will Improve Topinabee

As printed in the Cheboygan Tribune March 19, 2015

Regarding the recent article “Township seeks support from county,” on the Mullett Township grant, it should be noted that TDA (Topinabee Development Authority) meetings have large crowds in attendance usually filling the town hall.

They voice strong support for plans to improve the community, insuring it doesn’t deteriorate like many other Northern Michigan communities.

The TDA has approximately 100 dues-paying members. Since a “member” usually consists of a household, it means actual membership count is probably double that.

The streetscape initiative commencing in 2008, funded by numerous donors, was the result of interested members of the community coming together to develop a plan to work in concert with Mullett Township to attempt to arrest the decline of Topinabee businesses.

While the plans may not be perfect, no one else has bothered to develop plans of their own for the central business district.

What critics like to do is sit back, criticize and question the effort made by others. But in terms of one project, if summertime crowd size is any indication, the new beach park in Topinabee is an outstanding success.

The following organizations/individuals have submitted letters of support for the Beach Park Improvement Grant: Congressman Dan Benishek, Inverness Township, Cheboygan Area Schools, Burt Township, Tuscarora Township, Indian River Sports Center, Carl Parvanoff, Travis Conners, Representative Peter Pettalia, Paralyzed Veterans of America, State Senator Wayne Schmidt, Northern Lakes Economic Alliance, Lake Shore Beach Association, Indian River Kiwanis Club, The Friends of Topinabee Library, Indian River Chamber of Commerce, Mullett Lake Area Preservation Society, Cheboygan-Otsego-Presque Isle Educational Service District, TDA, Giaque Beach Association, Inland Lakes Schools, Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce, Top of Michigan Trails Council, Northern Michigan Council of Governments, Chris and Boots Wright, Burt Lake Trail and of course, grant sponsor, Mullett Township.

That’s a pretty good showing for a community the size of Topinabee!
