Mullett Township
is a general law township in Cheboygan County, Michigan. The population was 1312 in the 2010 US census. The township and Mullett Lake are named for John Mullett, who with William Burt, surveyed much of the area between 1840 and 1843.

The commercial center of the Township is the quiet unincorporated Village of Topinabee located on the west shore of Mullett Lake on M27 highway. The village is a trailhead for the DNR Trail with off-street parking and restrooms.

The village has a Post Office, Convenience Store with gas pumps, Public Library with 24 hour outdoor WiFi, an artisan-owned woodwork shop, a breakfast cafe and a bar and grille. Township owned buildings include the Library, Township Hall and Fire Hall, and an unused former school building on Lea St.

Recreation needs are served with a beachfront park and covered picnic area, free public boat launch at the north end of the village, a small public access to Mullett Lake across from the Nokia Cafe and tennis court, ball-field, and playground equipment at a public park located up the hill on Lea St.

The east side of Mullett Township is largely rural, with no commercial development. Township services include a Fire Hall and volunteer East Mullett Lake Fire Department.

Where Are The Trees? They Paved Over Paradise

The question of the day.

Where did all the beautiful, one hundred year old plus trees go from the Topinabee Park?

A Lazy Summer Day in the Tree Shaded Topinabee Park

I cannot answer that. Only those involved in the planning and design of the new park can answer your question. The appointed Project Coordinator is a Mr David Ogg and his published telephone number is 231-238-0956. Please direct any questions to Mr Ogg.

Now,  the question of where all the trees have gone has been answered. Some astute viewers recognized this growing pile of firewood at 5502 Numbers Road as the remains of our 100 year plus oak trees from the park.  What is the expression? To the friends go the spoils.

The following, a closed door meeting, not open to the public, is provided simply for informational purposes and to allow viewers to see who is running the Mullett Township Board and driving the need" for a Topinabee "streetscape".

            MEETING OF APRIL 10, 2013 - Streetscape

Meeting called by Jan Kellogg of Northern Lakes Economic Alliance in partnership with NEMCOG,April 10, 2013  Mullett Township Hall

The meeting took place at the Mullett Township Hall on April 10. 2013 at l0:00am to discuss the possibility of obtaining a grant for the enhancement of Topinabee.  Those in attendance were Mary Anne Gale and Rachel Osborn of the Mullett Township Board.  MDOT personnel, Paul Repasky of Wade Trim.  Jeff Comps of the Topinabee Market,  Tom and Mary O'Hare of the TDA and also David Ogg, TDA and Beach Project Manager,  Northern Lakes Economic Alliance Personnel and Mike Roper of the Cheboygan County Road Commission.

The scope of the meeting was how to keep the momentum going in future to obtain grants from MDOT for a grant that is now known as the Michigan Transportation Alternatives Program (formally known at the Enhancement Grant).  The concept plan was presented to the new persons representation the MDOT Team.
Patty O'Donnell, Eric Snyder, Chelsea Kramer.

Mullett Township Board of Trustees would have to approve a concept plan for the MDOT Team to present to their staff.  At that point, the MDOT staff would make suggestions and tell the township if the plan as presented is fundable.

Tom O'Hare and Paul Repasky took a walk around the areas that could be upgraded for parking and also looked at the areas in the MDOT right of way where the traffic could be slowed which is a goal.  Walkable sidewalks and crossing areas would need to be marked and in those areas, bump outs could be used to accomplish this goal.

Paul Repasky will be presenting an updated plan at the May 6th regular Township Meeting of the Board of Trustees to discuss the plan with the board and the public who are in attendance.  The Mullett Township Board of Trustees will need to approve the going forward of the plan.  Basically the board will need to think about the financial position of the Township Funds, timing and is this a priority for the community of Topinabee?  The Cheboygan County Road Commission would be the applicant on behalf of the Mullett Township Board of Trustees.  Because this is only a concept plan, it would be several years before any action would take place.  We are only in the planning stage and have many areas where many decisions would need to be discussed in detail.

The main purpose of this meeting is to find ways to improve the only commercial area of Mullett Township with the intent of bringing more businesses here and providing jobs.

Respectfully submitted,

Rachel Osborn
