Mullett Township
is a general law township in Cheboygan County, Michigan. The population was 1312 in the 2010 US census. The township and Mullett Lake are named for John Mullett, who with William Burt, surveyed much of the area between 1840 and 1843.

The commercial center of the Township is the quiet unincorporated Village of Topinabee located on the west shore of Mullett Lake on M27 highway. The village is a trailhead for the DNR Trail with off-street parking and restrooms.

The village has a Post Office, Convenience Store with gas pumps, Public Library with 24 hour outdoor WiFi, an artisan-owned woodwork shop, a breakfast cafe and a bar and grille. Township owned buildings include the Library, Township Hall and Fire Hall, and an unused former school building on Lea St.

Recreation needs are served with a beachfront park and covered picnic area, free public boat launch at the north end of the village, a small public access to Mullett Lake across from the Nokia Cafe and tennis court, ball-field, and playground equipment at a public park located up the hill on Lea St.

The east side of Mullett Township is largely rural, with no commercial development. Township services include a Fire Hall and volunteer East Mullett Lake Fire Department.

Turn right at the Topinabee Hardware. Many of us have said that.  One of Topinabee’s true landmark businesses is the Topinabee PRO Hardware owned and operated by Louis and Shirley Hadden.

"Louie" Serving A Customer
We all call him Louie. He and wife Shirley have served the needs of Mullett Township, both residents and tourists for decades. August, 2011 will mark 39 years of service to the community by the couple.

Louie “retired” from the family farm where he grew up near Rochester, MI and purchased the hardware store in 1972. All of the couple’s six children had some involvement in the business that in the past included both dock installation and lawn service. Louie says the dock business started after he volunteered years ago to install the Mullett Township public docks and people then asked him to install their docks.

Now happy with a simpler business plan and with a few loyal grass-cutting customers remaining, Louie and Shirley keep the hardware open 6 days a week, 8 AM to 6 PM, from early spring until mid-December. It is an old-fashioned hardware with old-fashioned service and has an extensive inventory of general hardware, plumbing, electrical, housewares, power tools, hand tools, lawn and garden care products, fishing tackle, and paint. If you are intimidated with a week-end project, Louie is always willing to share some valuable knowledge without cost or obligation. The hardware is also stocks apparel with the Topinabee logo and the infamous TOP-IN-A-BEE license plate.

Shirley Assisting A Customer
That sense of service is shown by Louie and Shirley’s many years of volunteer service to the community. For decades they have supported innumerable charitable causes, donating both their money and their time. They participated for years in the Topinabee Athletic Club’s annual chicken barbecue and corn roast. Louie also served 33 years on the Topinabee Fire Department including serving as Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Chief.

Next time you need a bolt, a quart of paint, a new lawn mower blade or chain saw chain sharpened, stop into this Topinabee landmark and let Louie or Shirley serve your needs.
