Mullett Township
is a general law township in Cheboygan County, Michigan. The population was 1312 in the 2010 US census. The township and Mullett Lake are named for John Mullett, who with William Burt, surveyed much of the area between 1840 and 1843.

The commercial center of the Township is the quiet unincorporated Village of Topinabee located on the west shore of Mullett Lake on M27 highway. The village is a trailhead for the DNR Trail with off-street parking and restrooms.

The village has a Post Office, Convenience Store with gas pumps, Public Library with 24 hour outdoor WiFi, an artisan-owned woodwork shop, a breakfast cafe and a bar and grille. Township owned buildings include the Library, Township Hall and Fire Hall, and an unused former school building on Lea St.

Recreation needs are served with a beachfront park and covered picnic area, free public boat launch at the north end of the village, a small public access to Mullett Lake across from the Nokia Cafe and tennis court, ball-field, and playground equipment at a public park located up the hill on Lea St.

The east side of Mullett Township is largely rural, with no commercial development. Township services include a Fire Hall and volunteer East Mullett Lake Fire Department.

Letter to Editor-Cheboygan Tribune-December 13, 2011

Dear Editor,

I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate the Topinabee Development Association (TDA) and in particular, Mr David Ogg and Mr Tom O’Hare for their tireless work successfully securing a $280,000 MNRTF Grant. These funds combined with the Mullett Township taxpayer’s match of $120,000 will completely rebuild the Topinabee Beach Front Park on the west side of Mullett Lake and forever change the appearance and use of one of Topinabee’s most important public assets.

As always, with a victory, others will attempt to associate themselves with this success. Please offer your thanks where thanks are due; to David, Tom, Mary, and those other behind the scenes TDA members who have worked diligently for several years on this project.  David and Tom, who serve as the two Board appointed public members on the Mullett Township Parks Committee, went the extra mile and on their own dime travelled to Lansing on more than one occasion to lobby hard for this project. Mr Ogg has also already volunteered his services as a coordinator/liaison for the project.

I am not a member of the TDA and have been a critic at times of both this project and the TDA. Whether we agree or not, the TDA has envisioned a Topinabee they want to see and this new park is an important first step in their master plan for Topinabee.  Mullett Township Board’s neglect of the old park has been a much discussed embarrassment to the community for years and I look forward to the expected completion date of this new park by the promised late 2012.

I will be applauding these individuals when they have their much deserved ribbon cutting ceremony next year.
