Mullett Township
is a general law township in Cheboygan County, Michigan. The population was 1312 in the 2010 US census. The township and Mullett Lake are named for John Mullett, who with William Burt, surveyed much of the area between 1840 and 1843.

The commercial center of the Township is the quiet unincorporated Village of Topinabee located on the west shore of Mullett Lake on M27 highway. The village is a trailhead for the DNR Trail with off-street parking and restrooms.

The village has a Post Office, Convenience Store with gas pumps, Public Library with 24 hour outdoor WiFi, an artisan-owned woodwork shop, a breakfast cafe and a bar and grille. Township owned buildings include the Library, Township Hall and Fire Hall, and an unused former school building on Lea St.

Recreation needs are served with a beachfront park and covered picnic area, free public boat launch at the north end of the village, a small public access to Mullett Lake across from the Nokia Cafe and tennis court, ball-field, and playground equipment at a public park located up the hill on Lea St.

The east side of Mullett Township is largely rural, with no commercial development. Township services include a Fire Hall and volunteer East Mullett Lake Fire Department.

Cheboygan Tribune-Letter to Editor-

If any Mullett Township residents want to watch another summer re-run on Tuesday, August 2nd at 7:30 PM, please attend the Mullett Township Library/Trustees Board Meeting at the Mullett Township Hall. The Board sits as an unelected Library Board at 7:30 and then convenes as your legally elected Board members at 8:00PM.

This episode first aired in January when the Library/Board of Trustees voted 4 to 1 in an open public meeting to select a library automation system for the Topinabee Library from Nugen Systems in Traverse City. Nugen and another software vendor had previously given a demonstration of their systems to all of the Board members except an absent Trustee Brown.

The sole dissenting vote was Township Clerk Rachel Osborn.  Ms Osborn, apparently indignant that her favored vendor was not chosen, just never got around to securing a contract with Nugen Systems.

After months of deception from Ms Osborn, I asked the Board what progress had been made with the library automation system. Ms Osborn implied to the Board there was a problem with the vendor and the selection would have to be readdressed.

I believe the problem is simply Ms Osborn’s indignation that her preferred vendor was not chosen. Nugen Systems continues to serve many northern Michigan libraries including the Indian River Area Library.

Ms Osborn, as an elected official and Township Clerk had the responsibility under law to act upon the Board’s majority vote and secure the library automation system the other 4 Board members voted on in good faith. The Mullett Township Board must remain democratic, not an autocratic entity serving Ms Osborn’s own interests.

Please attend or call Bill Morgan-Mullett Township Supervisor , 231-238-9163, and voice your opinion on this issue.
