Mullett Township
is a general law township in Cheboygan County, Michigan. The population was 1312 in the 2010 US census. The township and Mullett Lake are named for John Mullett, who with William Burt, surveyed much of the area between 1840 and 1843.

The commercial center of the Township is the quiet unincorporated Village of Topinabee located on the west shore of Mullett Lake on M27 highway. The village is a trailhead for the DNR Trail with off-street parking and restrooms.

The village has a Post Office, Convenience Store with gas pumps, Public Library with 24 hour outdoor WiFi, an artisan-owned woodwork shop, a breakfast cafe and a bar and grille. Township owned buildings include the Library, Township Hall and Fire Hall, and an unused former school building on Lea St.

Recreation needs are served with a beachfront park and covered picnic area, free public boat launch at the north end of the village, a small public access to Mullett Lake across from the Nokia Cafe and tennis court, ball-field, and playground equipment at a public park located up the hill on Lea St.

The east side of Mullett Township is largely rural, with no commercial development. Township services include a Fire Hall and volunteer East Mullett Lake Fire Department.

All Kinds Of Water-No Place To Dock

Attention Mullett Lake Boaters-As of 4:30 PM-June 17, 2010, the Boat Dock at Topinabee Park is being installed. If everything goes smoothly, you will be able to tie up later this evening or Saturday morning and visit all your favorite places in Topinabee.

As of Sunday, June 12, 2011, with another northern Michigan weekend ended, many residents and visitors are frustrated by the failure of the Mullett Township Board to have the public docks installed at the Topinabee Beach Park.  Our grass-cutting/dock installing Township Trustee had stated at a public meeting two months ago he would install the docks for $12 per section.  After installing the boat launch dock by early May and later the heavily used Boy Scout Park dock, he has evidently gotten wet feet and won’t go in the water. We don’t know when or why this malady developed.
Despite numerous angry calls, the Board waited until the regular monthly meeting on June 7, 2011 to review and approve a motion to hire two individuals for the sum of $450 to install three of the four free access public docks serving the west side of Mullett Lake. Supervisor Morgan has authorization from the Board to spend $500 without Board approval, and has shown his willingness to use this power in the past for much less pressing needs. Further delays now due to weather or scheduling must fall solely on the shoulders of Trustee Brown and Supervisor Morgan, not the two men who were only awarded the job on June 7, 2011.
I encourage you to call Supervisor Morgan at 231-238-9163 or 231-238-0488 and respecting Trustee Brown’s unlisted number, leave a message for him at the Township Clerk’s office, 231-627-4475. Let your elected officials know that as they continue to fail the community, the community will surely fail.
