Mullett Township
is a general law township in Cheboygan County, Michigan. The population was 1312 in the 2010 US census. The township and Mullett Lake are named for John Mullett, who with William Burt, surveyed much of the area between 1840 and 1843.

The commercial center of the Township is the quiet unincorporated Village of Topinabee located on the west shore of Mullett Lake on M27 highway. The village is a trailhead for the DNR Trail with off-street parking and restrooms.

The village has a Post Office, Convenience Store with gas pumps, Public Library with 24 hour outdoor WiFi, an artisan-owned woodwork shop, a breakfast cafe and a bar and grille. Township owned buildings include the Library, Township Hall and Fire Hall, and an unused former school building on Lea St.

Recreation needs are served with a beachfront park and covered picnic area, free public boat launch at the north end of the village, a small public access to Mullett Lake across from the Nokia Cafe and tennis court, ball-field, and playground equipment at a public park located up the hill on Lea St.

The east side of Mullett Township is largely rural, with no commercial development. Township services include a Fire Hall and volunteer East Mullett Lake Fire Department.

The TDA Works Hard To Pave Over Paradise

One Less Tree In Topinabee

The Topinabee Development Association's "Streetscape" Plans requires the removal of more mature trees from the center of Topinabee.

The TDA states they are "preserving and enhancing Topinabee". Ask Supervisor MaryAnne Gale why this preservation requires removal of every tree along the M27 corridor.

This photo, dated July of 2011, shows the Oak tree approved for removal by the Mullett Township Board on May 5, 2014. The majority of the trees visible in the background are already gone.  All removed during construction of the TDA Park because they were allegedly dead or diseased.

The tree removal was not on the published agenda, thwarting any public comment prior to the board vote. Clerk Osborn stated the tree was a safety hazard and a branch might fall on the restroom roof. The tree is so distant from the restroom that would appear impossible.

Removing the tree will simply expedite the paving of more green space in the village center. Clerk Osborn has already stated the large White Pine and Oak south of this tree will also go for parking lots. She states "There are lots of trees".

The TDA plans to move their "Streetscape" plans forward using Mullett's General Funds. $100,000 here, $80,000 there. Before you know it the village will have the largest pretty, but empty, paved parking lot in any community in Cheboygan County.

The TDA states the TDA Park, "Streetscape", and associated parking lots will be a tremendous area tourist attraction. I often make a special trip to Cheboygan, Pellston, Onaway, or even East Mitchell Street in Petoskey just to see the "beautiful" "streetscapes" that have driven the tremendous economic growth and new businesses in the heart of these  communities. NOT.

Please call or email these elected officials and voice your opposition to the loss of more mature trees.

As of May 19, 2014, your tree, your great-grand parent's tree, your grand parent's and parent's tree is gone. Gone forever. Watch as Tom O'Hare, the TDA, and the Mullett Township Board acting as the TDA's puppets continue to vandalize Topinabee attempting to make it a tony village to show off to their visitors.

Going, going, ......

Gone

This tree, possibly two hundred years old, is gone. It cannot be saved. The Mullett Board, as they did with the TDA Park, will claim the tree was diseased, dying, or already dead. Be thankful the TDA is not ministering to your healthcare as they continue this euthanasia of mature and irreplaceable trees.
