Mullett Township
is a general law township in Cheboygan County, Michigan. The population was 1312 in the 2010 US census. The township and Mullett Lake are named for John Mullett, who with William Burt, surveyed much of the area between 1840 and 1843.

The commercial center of the Township is the quiet unincorporated Village of Topinabee located on the west shore of Mullett Lake on M27 highway. The village is a trailhead for the DNR Trail with off-street parking and restrooms.

The village has a Post Office, Convenience Store with gas pumps, Public Library with 24 hour outdoor WiFi, an artisan-owned woodwork shop, a breakfast cafe and a bar and grille. Township owned buildings include the Library, Township Hall and Fire Hall, and an unused former school building on Lea St.

Recreation needs are served with a beachfront park and covered picnic area, free public boat launch at the north end of the village, a small public access to Mullett Lake across from the Nokia Cafe and tennis court, ball-field, and playground equipment at a public park located up the hill on Lea St.

The east side of Mullett Township is largely rural, with no commercial development. Township services include a Fire Hall and volunteer East Mullett Lake Fire Department.

Board Hears Some Anonymous Public Comment

The October 7th Mullett Township Board Meeting introduced some new attendees to those Mullett Township residents who will not stand for any opposition to their vision of Topinabee and their continuing attempts to thwart any public comment or opposition.

Some of the previously known parties are:

Thomas G O'Hare of the Topinabee Development Association, reprinted an earlier letter to the editor of mine in which I endorsed seeking a MNRTF Grant for the park on a folded post card. Mr O'Hare then bulk mailed this to Topinabee PO boxholders without placing his name on the card, attempting to convey this was my endorsement of the park design. Not true Tom. Anyone, including you, who knows me or follows this blog knows my steadfast criticism of the park design and also knows I offered many suggestions and alternative ideas attempting to accommodate more users.

This was followed by Arthur Glavin Gariepy, another Topinabee Development Association member, who penned this letter to the editor published on July 24, 2013. Mr Gariepy waxes poetic about the Topinabee Park before launching into a simple minded personal attack attempting to defame a person.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, perhaps there is no connection.

At about the same time, July 22, 2013, an apparently anonymous blogger, Marcy C Cross, as others are wont to say, neither a Mullett Township resident nor a registered voter took up the personal attack with numerous posts. She/he or whatever has spouted vitriolic comments, attempted to find "dirt", and unable to find any, simply fabricates slander about one particular person for months.

All this is done by an anonymous "she"  showing the world the "truth" about Mullett Township.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, perhaps there is no connection.

Apparently, these vitriolic comments and attempts to ostracize an individual within the community were ineffective. People in Topinabee were still carrying on conversations, exercising their right to freely associate and talk about any topic.

In September, Erv Crawford, owner of ABC Rustics in Topinabee found an unsigned letter stuck in the door at his place of business referencing Erv Crawford's comments at the September Mullett Board meeting. This letter is reprinted here verbatim with the Crawford's permission.

ABC RUSTICS: Many of us at the Township Meeting last Monday were embarrassed for you when you spoke for Carl and asked the the questions he designed for you. Your wife did not hurt her back, there were no stolen tables and your offer to repair tables and place them on properties that you have never set foot on were all orchestrated by Carl. We , some of us, were embarrassed for you, others were angry with you.

Most of us who are residents here and vote here have many summer visitors. We are happy and proud to direct them to ABC RUSTICS.You have chosen to carry the water for Carl who does nothing for this community and has no visitors or friends that he brings to your establishment. You have chosen Carl to represent you a person that spends all of his time being negative about Topinabee.

Carl, like you, is not a resident of Mullett Township, he cannot vote in Michigan because he is not a registered voter.
You are probably a registered voter, but not in this Township.

You need to think about what you have accomplished ----you have established that you are anti-Topinabee, you
have alienated a group of residents who have directed their friends and visitors to your establishment and are not inclined to support you any further I have some people who purchased property in Scotts Bay, and as they live and work in another country, they depend on me to recommend t;he place to buy their boat, there dock, someone to but their boat and dock in and take it out, someone to remove their carpeting and install wood floors, to change their locks, etc. They will be here for two weeks in the next month and have asked me to direct them to someone who will build some rustic furniture for them -----last week I had planned to have then meet you -----now that you have become the spokesperson for Carl, I will make an appointment with the Pellston craftsman for them.

I CONSIDER YOU AN EXCEPTIONAL ARTIST ---- Carl sees you as someone to help him with his hate agenda. His white van sitting in front of your establishment for hours at a time and his presence in your store for hours is not the foot print that really defines the quality of your work, I am so sorry for the choice that you have made.

I agree that anonymous comments deserve no comment or response and should get no exposure. They come from cowards who are afraid to attach their name to their words. Like Marcy C Cross, this author's hate letter shows an obvious ignorance of the facts and the willingness to fabricate. Erv Crawford has resided in Mullett Township all of his life and I was not privy to his planned attendance at the September meeting or his comments. Erv was courageous  to stand up at a public meeting and read this hate-filled diatribe.

After the meeting, as I drove home, it appeared that another attendee of the October 7th Board Meeting, held at the East Mullett Fire Hall either lived miles south of Indian River, as I do, or was attempting to follow me to my residence. Going out of my way and turning back on this suspicious vehicle, which then fled, I identified a silver grey minivan, Michigan plate # BVC 2419, driven by an Arthur Glavin Gariepy and accompanied by his wife, Julia Gariepy. Public records indicate the Gariepys reside at Liberty Point. Fisher Woods and Wilson Rd is a long detour home for this pair.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, perhaps there is no connection.

Julia Gariepy did approach me in public at the infamous Topinabee Public Library to offer an apology after getting caught. I feel that action on their part, taking it upon themselves to follow a citizen for some unknown reason, was inexcusable for an adult and I refused to accept her apology.

Next post, back to Mullett Township business. Board members in the dark, should meetings be closed to the public? Bid or quote, are they the same? New dogs, old dogs, more of the same old tricks.
